Wind Power Explained

Harnessing the Wind

Wind power generates electricity using wind turbines. The wind turns large blades connected to a rotor, which spins a generator to create electricity. It's a clean, renewable source with zero direct emissions during operation.

Types:

  • Onshore Wind: Turbines located on land, often grouped into wind farms. Generally cheaper to build.
  • Offshore Wind: Turbines located in bodies of water, usually the sea. Can access stronger, more consistent winds but are more expensive to build and maintain.

Wind energy is a rapidly growing sector, crucial for reducing fossil fuel dependency, though considerations include visual impact, noise, and effects on wildlife (especially birds).
