Composting Basics at Home

Turning Waste into "Black Gold"

Composting is the natural process of recycling organic matter, such as leaves and food scraps, into a valuable fertilizer that can enrich soil.

Benefits:

  • Reduces landfill waste and associated methane emissions.
  • Enriches soil, helping retain moisture and suppress plant diseases.
  • Reduces the need for chemical fertilizers.
  • Encourages beneficial bacteria and fungi.

What to Compost (The Greens & Browns):

  • Greens (Nitrogen-rich): Fruit & vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, tea bags, grass clippings, plant trimmings.
  • Browns (Carbon-rich): Dead leaves, twigs, branches, cardboard (shredded), paper (shredded), wood chips, sawdust.

What to Avoid:

  • Meat, fish, dairy products, oily foods (can attract pests and create odors).
  • Diseased plants or weeds gone to seed.
  • Pet waste.
  • Chemically treated wood.

Maintain a good balance of greens and browns, keep the pile moist, and turn it occasionally to aerate.
